Ella Cruz is 25 years old. She should know better.

Remember when the Internet was surprised over PBB teens calling GomBurZa as ‘MaJoHa’? There’s another young individual who’s most likely a victim of false information. Actress Ella Cruz trended for her stance that history is like “tsismis” or gossip.

Speaking with PhilStar for the pro-Marcos film titled Maid In Malacañang, Cruz shared that she will play Irene Marcos-Araneta, the third child of the late dictator Ferdinand Marcos Sr. She also explained that she is “open to hear the other side of history through the film.”

The actress added, ‘[History] is filtered and dagdag na rin, so, hindi natin alam what is the real history. Andoon na iyong idea, pero may mga bias talaga. As long as we’re here alive at may kanya-kanyang opinion, I respect everyone’s opinion.’

Cruz’s statement instantly went viral as people related it to marites memes. Content creator Inka Magnaye also chimed in and pointed out that Cruz’s situation shows how “disinformation works.” Magnaye clarified that she wasn’t “defending” Cruz and even described her as someone “super sweet.”

Magnaye emphasized, ‘I didn’t say she was correct. I’m just saying this is a great example of how influence works. How disinformation works. If this is how disinformation affects 25-year-olds, what more kids who are younger.’

However, some users opposed Magnaye’s tweet. One user argued and said it’s “hard to position Ella Cruz as a victim of disinformation per se”, given that the actress is a privileged adult with access to information.

Meanwhile, Filipino Historian Ambeth Ocampo addressed Cruz’s statement. He said, ‘History may have bias but it is based on fact not opinion. Real History is about Truth, not lies, not fiction.’

Historian Alvin Campomanes of the University of the Philippines Manila reposted his 2016 after hearing what Cruz said. He sarcastically said that history programs of different universities can be discontinued due to the spread of historical disinformation and revisionism online.

‘Balewala na ang mga ito dahil napapag-aralan na ang history sa Facebook,’ Campomanes added. ‘Kaya kayong lahat na gusto maging historian, mag-enroll na kayo sa Facebook University (Fac-U)!’

May be an image of 1 person and text that says 'Alvin D. Campomanes May 12, 2016 Pwede nang buwagin ang existing history programs ng iba't bang unibersidad. Huwag na po kayong mag-offer ng BA, MA at Ph.D. History.

While it’s easy to say that Cruz is a “victim of disinformation”, it’s hard to ignore that she’s a 25-year-old coming from a generation that’s always on the Internet. She has over 7 million followers on Tiktok, 6 million on Instagram, and over a million on Twitter. There’s little excuse to not be proactive in doing a simple Google search, fact-check Filipino history, and understanding the importance of historians.
