Lea Salonga on Filipino representation on the Pretty Little Liars reboot

Lea Salonga is back on our screens; this time, she is full of secrets.

A year after starring in 2019’s Yellow Rose, a film about the story of Filipino immigrants, Lea Salonga is back on her acting grind with Pretty Little Liars: Original Sin on HBO.

Salonga is introduced as Elodie Honrada in the slasher horror drama. Salonga plays one of Minnie “Mouse” Honrada’s queer Asian moms, played by Filipino-American actress Malia Pyles.

HBO Go has released the first three episodes of the Pretty Little Liars reboot, and new episodes air every Thursday.

Portraying a Filipino character in the series, in a conversation with PhilStar Global, Salonga touched on the topic of Asian representation. She said she is happy with “more and more representations as the years have gone by.”

She added, “I get to see more of our faces and that casting for shows is more diverse. I feel like okay, we’re not being shoehorned into something just so there can be a diversity here. It feels like we are included, considered and given consideration to be part of these stories.”

Salonga herself became a big contributor to Asian representation in the U.S. with her years of theater experience.

She earned a Tony award for Miss Saigon and went on  Les Miserables, and of course, her Disney stint as the singing voice behind Princess Jasmine and Mulan.

Part of the original cast of Pretty Little Liars is Filipino-Candian actress Shay Mitchell who happens to be Lea’s relative. Mitchell is the daughter of Salonga’s first cousin Precious Garcia-Mitchell.

Guess representing Filipinos in the series runs in the family.
