Vice Ganda proved that calling out without canceling is possible

Yes, it’s possible to call someone out but not cancel them.

Vice Ganda made waves on social media yet again, but this time for calling out the attention of a Miss Q&A contestant who poked fun at persons with physical impairments.

On the August 2 episode of Its Showtime, during the introduction of one of the Miss Q&A candidates, Dimple Ruiz proceeded to mock “ngongo” and use the term “mongoloid” as a joke. Starting off by making gibberish sounds, they followed the spiel by saying, “oh ano? Akala niyo ngongo ako no? Monggoloid kaya ako.”

However, the comedian host did not waste any time coming to action and correcting Ruiz.

“In behalf of candidate number 3, ngayon pa lamang ay humihingi na po kami ng paumanhin sa maaari mang na-offend o hindi nagustuhan ang mga sinabi niya sa simula.

Lalo na ang pag gamit ng mga salitang ngongo at mongoloid. Hindi na natin yun ginagamit.” adding that the contestant uttered a different version of the joke during rehearsals.

Ruiz went on to apologize “I’m sorry po, dinagdag ko lang. I’m really sorry po, I didn’t mean it.

Gusto ko lang po magbigay ng kasiyahan, but hindi ko po sinasadya yun. I’m really sorry for that.” 

The Internet praised the “character development” of Vice, who has had her fair share of insensitive jabs in the past. People also commended the comedian for not canceling or shaming Ruiz for the mistake.

Others praised how the audience and the studio immediately recognized the inappropriate spiel.

After the show aired, Ruiz took to Facebook to share how Vice Ganda visited them in the dressing room to comfort them.
