The Internet cares about Monkeypox because of how it can affect their looks

That is the general pulse of the public when news broke out that a new infectious viral disease is here.

Monkeypox, as defined by the World Health Organization (WHO), is a viral zoonosis (a virus transmitted to humans from animals) with symptoms similar to those seen in the past in smallpox patients, although it is clinically less severe.

Since smallpox has been eradicated in the 1980s, monkeypox has been the most critical orthopoxvirus for public health. Primarily, monkeypox occurs in proximity to tropical rainforests in central and west Africa. However, recently, there has been an increase in its appearance in urban areas.

One may look out for signs and symptoms of fever, intense headache, swelling of the lymph nodes, back pain, muscle aches, and lack of energy within the first five days. Whereas skin eruption may begin within 1-3 days from the appearance of the fever. In most cases, the rashes may affect the face, with hands and feet coming a close second.

Because of how the rashes appear, the Internet is not liking how it is looking, literally and figuratively.

While some are posting informational content, such as infographics with everything one would need to know about the new disease, others post about their distaste for how it can affect their looks.

Few comments that gained many reactions were concerned with aesthetics.

One read: “It’s not vain to care about your appearance when you live in a society that treats beauty as currency.” Another reads, “as a person with skin asthma, ibang level yung takot ko sa monkeypox kesa sa covid,”

Others claim they were more afraid of the new disease over the spread of COVID last year.

However, many reacted against how other content seemed more superficial and focused on looks. Both are serious health issues, and regardless if the effects are more physical than internal, everyone must be vigilant all the same.
