Alex Eala’s Filipino tribute speech is as historic as her US Open win

The 17-year-old Filipina emerged as the big winner at the prestigious 2022 US Open junior championships

Held early Sunday morning Manila time in Flushing Meadows at Queens, 17-year-old Alex Eala bagged a historical win for her first junior singles Grand Slam crown at the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center in New York City.

In her speech, Alex spoke in Filipino to thank all her supporters and sponsors. She said this win was not her’s alone, but was also dedicated to the advancement of Philippine tennis.

The left-handed ace was able to surmount a 6-2, 6-4 win over Cech Republic’s Lucie Havlickova, over Czech Republic’s Lucie Havlickova, who ranks third in the world rankings. Trained by her mentor Rafael Nadal, Alex only took 68 minutes to defeat Havlickova to conclude her US open campaign.

After choosing to focus on the women’s professional circuit, this is also Alex’s first time competing in a junior tourney this season.

In 2019, the Quezon-city-born protege started her US Open career where she advanced to the second round of the competition. She came back in 2021 where she was able to reach the quarterfinals.

Other wins Alex was able to achieve were two junior Grand slam double titles at the 2020 Australia Open and the 2021 French Open.
