If archenemies, why shippable?

Since Darna’s debut, Jane De Leon and Janella Salvador have consistently trended for their stellar performances as Darna and Valentina, respectively. But as the average viewer comments on the show’s performances and VFX, Filipino Internet seems hellbent on shipping the heroine and her iconic villainess.

Between Jane’s girl-next-door vibe, Janella’s “sorry mommy? mommy, sorry” portrayal of Atty. Regina Vanguardia, and their undeniable chemistry, Darlentina is a thing. There is enough fan-made content to support the ship, from Wattpad-esque stories, artworks, to edits lifted from the show.

Could the new Darna accurately depict how queer the youth is now? It would be the first in the character’s 71-year history, and certainly a massive plot twist if they portray her as such. Mainstream media is more progressive than ever, given the smatterings of BL (Boy Love) and GL (Girl Love) shows today.

Or, you know, Darna could end up with her hundredth leading man. We are a country that does treat progress like a disease. One thing’s for sure, ‘bading ang bato’ – at least for a certain niche, as seen below.
