#SaveSierraMadre: Let us preserve what protects us

Sierra Madre trended once again on the Internet for protecting us from another possible calamity. Although Karding inevitably still made landfall and caused floods, the mountain range significantly helped minimize the typhoon’s effects and damage as it has never ceased to do so before.

The Sierra Madre is trending because people are being reminded anew of its service as natural barrier against typhoons for our people.
The mountain range is protecting us, but what are we doing to protect it?
Here’s a thread of what must be done to #ProtectSierraMadre:

Known as ‘The Backbone of Luzon’, the Sierra Madre looks like a spinal column and protects the island from storms. It covers 10 provinces and is 6,069 feet tall. The mountain range also represents 40% of the country’s forest cover, containing 1.4 million hectares of old-growth tropical rainforest.
Sierra Madre’s role is so vital in typhoon prevention that the late president Benigno Aquino III declared September 26 as Save Sierra Madre day according to Proclamation No. 413 after the onslaught of typhoon Ondoy in 2009.
Another typhoon that the Sierra Madre was known to have helped sift was typhoon Ulysses in 2020.
Apart from that, the Sierra Madre is also home to some of the most treasured Philippine species such as the Philippine Eagle, the golden-green sea turtle, and the flying fox.
However, sadly, the continuous deforestation and the Kaliwa Dam project of the past Duterte administration might lead to the last days of the beautiful Sierra Madre. There is also the subject of legal and illegal mining and construction that further contribute to its ruin.
It is of utmost importance to support the preservation of what helps preserve us not only on this day but every day.
