Real life ‘Mama Coco’ dies at 109 years old

Rest in peace, Mama Coco

Said to be the inspiration behind the Pixar hit, the Mexican grandmother passed peacefully last October 16.

Maria Salud Ramirez Caballero, who was reportedly the inspiration behind Mama Coco’s character in the hit Pixar film ‘Coco’, has peacefully passed away as announced by the Mexican State of Michoacan Secretary of Tourism, Roberto Monroy.

Monroy did not supply a reason for her passing and only honored her beautiful memory. “I deeply regret the death of Doña María Salud Ramírez Caballero, “Mamà Coco”, a tireless woman and example of life, who was the inspiration for this beloved character who went around the world.”

The official Facebook account of Doña Salud also updated its followers of her passing and people promptly sent their heartfelt condolences.

Doña Salud passed in her hometown of Santa Fe de la Laguna in Michoacàn, where she was a clay craftswoman who sold her trade to her neighbors, who gave Salud the nickname “Mama Coco” following the movie.

Doña Salud’s family spent her last days trying to get Disney to officially acknowledge that she was the inspiration behind the beloved character.

Doña Salud’s family also claims that Coco‘s production team took extensive photos of Salud when the crew lived with them for a period of time. Disney and Pixar still have yet to comment.

Despite the lack of confirmation from the creators, the uncanny similarities between the two motivated fans of the movie to consider Salud to be the pinnacle of the character. Some made the effort to visit her in her hometown to take pictures with her.
