Lesbian Velma, finally!

Scooby-Doo fans are ECSTATIC as Velma Dinkley is canonically lesbian in the latest Scooby movie.

In the new ‘Trick or Treat Scooby‘ Halloween movie, Velma develops a crush on costume designer Coco Diablo. The scene specifically sees Velma blushing at the sight of Coco. She was awkward in front of her crush, uttering her iconic  “Jinkies,”. 

Velma being smitten confirmed what fans and former showrunners either speculated or hinted at throughout the years.

in 2020, Tony Cervone, producer of ‘Mystery Incorporated,’ revealed that Velma was indeed a lesbian in that universe.

“I obviously don’t represent every version of Velma Dinkley, but I am one of the key people that represents this one. We made our intentions as clear as we could ten years ago.” he wrote on an Instagram post.

Meanwhile, James Gunn, who served as the writer of the earlier ‘Scooby-Doo live-action films, spoke about the character’s sexuality in a deleted tweet. He wrote, “In 2001, Velma was explicitly gay in my initial script. But the studio just kept watering it down.” 

Hayley Kiyoko, the actor who gave life to Velma for ‘Scooby-Doo! The Mystery Begins‘ a role she later reprised in its sequel, ‘Scooby-Doo! Curse of the Lake Monster‘, reacted to how Velma now reflects her own sexuality.

I remember booking Velma in 2008. It was my first big role in a movie. I also remember thinking ‘I wonder if they know they hired a lesbian as Velma’ here we are, 14 years later…… love you all so much

Although we’ve been known, finally, after 5 decades of her existence, we have an on-screen confirmation from Velma herself.

‘Trick or Treat Scooby-Doo!’ has been out digitally on Prime Video since yesterday, October 4, and will make its TV debut on Cartoon Network on October 14.
