Donny Pangilinan starred in an advocacy film about human trafficking victims
‘Graduation‘ stars Donny Pangilinan as Kuya Topher and Nour Hooshmand as Kika
The short film is a trafficking recovery story by Called to Rescue PH
Premiered on October 25, ‘Graduation’ is Donny Pangilinan’s first indie advocacy short film. In partnership with Called to Rescue PH, a non-profit organization that is dedicated to helping rescue missing children that have either been abused or trafficked, and Media Works APG, the story follows Kika (Nour Hooshmand) and her brother Topher (Donny Pangilinan).
Directed by international director Dean Colin Marical, whose work includes ‘Manila Death Squad’ and ‘Reminiscences of the Green Revolution’, the film sees Topher and his sister Kika navigate through an overlooked aspect of a human trafficking victim: how the victim handles reintegration into society.
Kika is shown to have a panic attack during her graduation day as she is apprehensive to face a crowd, even one that is filled with her loved ones. Topher then helps her get over the panic attack gently by reminding her he will be with her all the way.
The movie reminds us that trauma hits everyone differently and even though survivors may seem ok on the outside, support from those close to them are very necessary. Another aspect highlighted was that healing is not linear and triggers may happen on even the most important days so a kind energy and voice are very grounding.
Fans praised Donny for his spot-on acting as his gentleness was able to transcend through the screen. They also thanked him for using his talent and platform to shed light on a greater cause.
It seems like the advocacy runs in the family. Donny’s father, Anthony Pangilinan was seen towards the end of the film. Meanwhile, his brother Benjamin and cousin Gab Pangilinan were behind the music and musical score of the movie.
Nour Hooshmand also took to Instagram to share how being in the film reminded her of the equal importance of sharing stories and listening more as well.
