G-Idle’s Soyeon wrote ‘Nxde’ to clear out child pornography searches on Korean search engines

Through a quick listen and view of the G-Idle’s most recent music video, the inspiration from female icon Marilyn Monroe is very obvious. The members’ hair dyed blonde and donning bold looks were an immediate giveaway. However, apart from all the glitz and glamour and the song being a banger, there is a deeper meaning to it.
Once you look up the lyrics, the song isn’t what it first seems. It is not about being sexy and racy. The song is actually about the male gaze and the sexualization of women, especially female K-pop idols. From the beginning, Soyeon sings ‘why you think about nude? cause your view’s so rude. think outside the box.’ Having that meaning in mind is also why the group chose to have a video inspired by Marilyn Monroe.
“She was famous for being sexually attractive and for being a dumb blonde image. But I heard she was actually very smart.” Soyeon shares in a pre-released ‘I Love‘ interview. She later notes how Marilyn wanted to shake off her image and show who she really was. An important feminist message the song and video wanted to portray as well.
More importantly, Soyeon has a bigger mission for writing the song.
In a recent interview, Soyeon reveals that the title of the song is to actually help decrease the search results for child pornography.

Their group name G-Idle in Korean means “children”. So when typed along with “nxde” or “nude”, it is their content that will now pop up immediately instead of explicit and illegal photos. Unfortunately, this type of pornographic content, especially non-consensual videos of women is common in South Korea.
Leaked hidden camera footage of both women and children is an unfortunate reality which is why the Internet praises Soyeon for her brilliant solution and progressiveness.
