MMFF film ‘My Father, Myself’ is making the Internet really uncomfy

There was so much going on all at once.

The Internet also pointed out how this portrayal is detrimental to the LGBTQ+ community

The release of the MMFF entry ‘My Father, Myself’ trailer took the Internet by storm this weekend.

Directed by Joel Lamangan, the film, according to the trailer, follows the story of Robert (Jake Cuenca) adopting Matthew (Sean De Guzman) and taking him in as his own.

Matthew forms a bond with Robert’s daughter Mica (Tiffany Grey) and as they get older, Mica reveals she sees Matthew more than a brother.

The story doesn’t stop there. As Matthew visits his parents’ grave, he confronts Robert. Apparently, Robert had an affair with Matthew’s dad and Matthew saw them kissing one day.

However, that’s not all. Matthew admits he has feelings for Robert.

Confusion riddled the Internet the more the plot progressed.

Mica gets pregnant after sleeping with Matthew. She tells her parents. Her parents arrange their marriage and as they get engaged, she catches Matthew kissing her father. Yes, Matthew was kissing Robert, because Robert finally admitted to having feelings for Matthew.

It seems like the Internet was not pleased with what we’ve seen so far. Not only because of how much there was going on, but incest isn’t really the best thing to watch for Christmas, as the MMFF usually happens in December.

Some members of the LGBTQ+ community also shared how they felt misrepresented by how the characters were portrayed so far. The story’s themes which follow extramarital affairs only added fuel to more existing misconceptions about the community.

The actors in the film, however, spoke about accepting their roles in the movie after reading the script in a storycon.

Dimples Romana, who plays the role of Jake Cuenca’s wife in the film, noted how she accepted the project because of the story and her history working with Direk Joel Lamangan.

Jake Cuenca also opened up about how it was a goal of his to portray a BL (Boys Love) character, and because of the story and his trust in the director, he was sold.

Here’s hoping the trailer is for shock value, but the story itself has substance.
