Should public figures be required to be chummy at all times?

Do athletes, celebrities, and public figures really owe fans anything?

In light of the recent controversy surrounding some volleyball players caught snubbing their fans, the Internet began taking sides: should the athletes have said hi to their fans, or should the fans have respected their private time?

The whole thing began with a post made by Rendon Labador on Facebook. He called out the Choco Mucho Flying Titans volleyball team that seemingly did not even bother to acknowledge their fans calling out for them in a surfacing video.

After it became viral, the comments section started to become divided. Although there were some that agreed with Labador’s sentiments that a simple “hi”, nod, or wave from them could have made their supporters’ day, others began to reason that the athletes didn’t owe their fans anything as it was seemingly their day off.

More fuel was added to the fire when host and tri-athlete Kuya Kim Atienza shared the post with the sentiment of reminding the team of their responsibility to act properly in public as athletes too are public figures.

What an irritating yet sad sight.” added Atienza in his post.

However, Twitter users saw the situation differently. They brought up that fans should also know how to set some boundaries and that athletes are not celebrities.

Several argued that the players were in their off-season, which is the only time they use to rest and recover.

It seems as though Rica Peralejo also chimed in with her sentiments indirectly. The actress answered a question that read, “Your TikTok makes me really like you. Ayoko sayo dati as artista kasi nagkasalubong tayo sa moa nagsuplada ka. Pero as I mature, I realized na tao ka din.”

She then replied by saying that this was always something she wanted to talk about. As an introvert, Rica said she found it hard to engage with fast engagements. She also added that not every time celebrities like her go out is for interactions with fans.

Tao lang din kami. When we’re out, we’re actually doing normal people things.”

Since then, the involved team in the issue, the Choco Mucho Flying Titans has released a statement.

The message also clarified that it was a spliced video. It did not show how earlier on, the team members were interacting with their fans.

They also denounce all the hurtful and unnecessary comments received by the players because of the incident.

There are indeed always two sides to a story. There are also surely things to work on by all the parties involved.

What’s important is at the end of the day, everyone knows their responsibilities, and boundaries, while remaining respectful doing so.
