‘Pang-ilan ka sa magkakapatid?’ Miss Universe translates query in English

Filipinos on the internet have long debated and offered different answers—How do you translate the phrase, “Pang-ilan ka sa magkakapatid?” in English?

It seems as if there’s no clear cut answer to the question. Even if you run it through Google Translate, it gives the answer “How many siblings are you?” which is not accurate.

An interview posted by Miss Universe from the 71st edition of the pageant shed light on the matter, as Miss South Africa Ndavi Nokeri was asked about her family life.

“Of all the siblings in the family where do you stand?”

That was the query asked, to which Ndavi said she was the “last” and the “baby” at home.

Miss Universe Philippines candidate and Morena the Label founder Ayn Bernos shared the translation on Twitter, prompting Filipinos to give their take on the English version.

“Alternatively: where do you fall in the birth order of your siblings,” one netizen said.

“Shortest I have heard from Americans: ‘What is your birth order?’ Understood na siya within the siblings,” a Twitter user brought up.

Meanwhile, others gave a more Miss Universe answer, taking “stand” literally.

“Among my siblings, I stand corrected,” a person joked.

One user took inspiration from Miss Universe 2015 Pia Wurtzbach for their translation: “I stand to show the world, the universe rather, that I am confidently beautiful with a heart. Thank you!”

Another made reference to Miss Universe 2018 Catriona Gray’s Q&A speech. “I stand here not as one but as a hundred and four million filipinos!!!”

ICYMI, at the 2022 Miss Universe in New Orleans, Filipino-American R’Bonney Gabriel, representing the USA, nabbed the crown. Philippines’ Celeste Cortesi, on the other hand, ended her journey before the Top 16.

Is there a clearer way to phrase this question in English?
