Rupert Grint describes starring in ‘Harry Potter’ for over a decade as ‘quite suffocating’
For 11 years, Rupert Grint was Ron Weasley.
The now 34-year-old actor donned the Hogwarts robe since he was an 11-year-old theater kid, and came out of the eight Harry Potter movies a 22-year-old adult. The experience wasn’t as magical as it seems as it Grint opened up about how “quite suffocating” it became.
In a January 2023 interview with Bustle Magazine, Grint opened up about how it was like spending a chunk of his life on the fantasy film set.
“Potter was so full on—[filming] all year, then we’d promote the rest of the time. It was quite suffocating,” he said. “I wanted a break, to reflect on everything… It was an out-of-body experience for a while, but I think we finished at the right time. If we continued, it could’ve gone downhill.”
Grint also talked about how his identity and Ron Weasley’s got warped.
“In the movies, we merged into one. By the end of it, I was playing myself. The lines were blurred,” he said, adding how people call him by his character’s name. “I answer to it, if someone calls me Ron. It’s my second name.”
The actor and the rest of the Harry Potter cast reunited in 2022 for HBO’s Harry Potter 20th Anniversary: Return to Hogwarts special.
Since Harry Potter, Grint has starred in projects with darker themes, including Guillermo del Toro’s Cabinet of Curiosities, Servant, and M. Night Shyamalan’s upcoming film Knock at the Cabin.
