PSA: SIM card registration ends on April 26

Have you registered your SIM card with your telco yet?

With the deadline for SIM card registration fast approaching, the Department of Information and Communications Technology (DICT) announced that there will be no extension for the April 26 end date “at this point.”

The agency made this announcement after telcos Globe, Smart, and DITO requested to push the date further.

In October 2022, the SIM card registration act was signed into law as spam and scam text messages became more prevalent. The act would see its users registering their SIM cards with their names.

Those who fail to register by April 26 will have their mobile number deactivated and unable to receive texts or calls.

“We encourage everyone to register to promote the responsible use of SIMs and provide law enforcement agencies the necessary tools to crack down on perpetrators who use SIMs for their crimes, consistent with the declared policy of the law,” DICT’s statement on April 19 read.

According to the National Telecommunications Commission, 37.15% of Globe users (32.2 million), 55.14% of Smart users (74.1 million), and 36.08% of DITO users (5.4 million) have already registered their SIM cards. This makes up a little less than half of active mobile subscribers.

Some groups, however, have petitioned the Supreme Court to junk the SIM card registration act for being unconstitutional. The National Union of Journalists in the Philippines said the law infringes on sections of the Bill of Rights, including the right to free speech, right against unreasonable searches and seizures, and right to substantive due process.
