Biden, who once opposed Marcos, welcomes BBM to the White House

Is the past in the past for United States President Joe Biden?

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. is yet again on another international trip and this time he was welcomed at the White House by Biden.

Their meeting was held to strengthen the “deep friendship” between the two countries as concerns about China’s harassment of our vessels continue in the West Philippine Sea.

Biden’s move to invite Marcos led some to recall how the US chief once opposed the current PH president’s dictator father.

According to a report by the Washington Post and the US Congressional Record, Biden was a critic of the Marcos Sr. In the 80s, the then-senator opposed ex-president Ronald Raegan’s efforts to protect the dictator and his family.

The US-PH friendship was supposedly maintained to keep the former country’s military bases.

“If we are totally identified with a corrupt, discredited regime that does not have the support of its people, we may be able to hold on to our bases in the short term but we will so alienate the people that we will lose them in the long run,” Biden said in 1986.

Marcos wasn’t even allowed in the US until he became President last year. He and his mother Imelda were barred from entering US territories due to a $353 million contempt order over unpaid damages for the human rights abuses under Marcos Sr.

But this visit from April 30 to May 4 is already his second trip to the US, with his first working visit in New York in September 2022.
