Keep aware of your surroundings! A seemingly new modus operandi is here
It is always important to stay vigilant whenever you’re outside
During the last week of April, a post made by Facebook user Stephanie Jean went viral as she aimed to spread awareness about something her younger sister experienced as she was near her campus.
Stephanie Jean started off her post by saying, “New Modus! Please inform everyone about this!” following it up with a recount of what happened to her sister. According to the now-trending post that has gathered 213,000 shares and 118,000 reactions, her sister was walking around the area of Los Baños around 5 PM when she entered a Mercury Drugstore. A lady then came near her and asked her if she could “smell” something for her as she couldn’t do it herself. Her sister then took a whiff of it, and after telling the lady it smelled okay, the lady vanished.
Her sister then noticed two people coming into the store that she noticed were kind of following her. Feeling unsafe, her sister stayed need the guard while her body started becoming numb. The two people following her were still in the drugstore at this point watching her.
As her sister did not leave the side of the guard, the two people then left after circling the store for so long, only to get one small item.
After asking for a friend to pick her up, by 7 PM she was still very drowsy and wasn’t able to feel half her body.
Both Stephanie nor her sister didn’t know what was in the perfume, but ask people to take extra caution as it can lead to loss of sensation and can possibly knock you out. Thankfully, her sister was aware of her surroundings and was at a well-lit place where she could stay beside a guard so she would not be harassed or followed any further, but not all areas allow this safety. Although we try our best to help others in need, like the woman who asked for her sister’s help, always trust your gut when something feels off.
Lastly, it is never ok to blame a victim for what they experienced. Saying things like “she should have known better to smell something she didn’t know”, or even saying you don’t believe what happened are counterintuitive. The more people know these things are happening, the more people can hopefully avoid these situations in the future.
Stay vigilant and safe.
