Parents, check what your kids are playing: Roblox isn’t as child-friendly as it seems

On the outside, Roblox seems like a friendly game safe for kids but there’s a grimy bottom underneath it.

One Redditor brought attention to how there were some experiences on the game that are actually sexual in nature—something that kids can access.

For the unfamiliar, Roblox is an online gaming platform where users can create mini-games for other users to create. It’s similar to Minecraft with its colorful, animated style and community-driven nature. The game has been downloaded over 383 million times and 29% of its users are aged 9 to 12 years old.

Kids accessing NSFW games

Reddit user u/BukPlazlol came across two sex-based games in the Filipino Roblox community called “PH Hangout 22o” and “Boldhaven.” In these hangouts, players can “remove clothes” and “do sexual acts.”

The worst part, however, was that most of the players are children, the Redditor revealed.

“I saw the game’s chat in which one of the players revealed their age[s] [ranging from] 10, 9, 11, and 12,” he wrote in a post.

Like the communities’ lewd nature, players would also display similar behavior like asking other users to hook up in real life, saying the N-word, and bearing problematic symbols.

These kinds of games within Roblox aren’t unique to the Philippines, however. The BBC reported similar hangouts in 2022 with explicit avatars having sex and wearing Nazi uniforms.

These games aren’t easy to stumble on and users will really need to do digging to find them. On Facebook and Discord, there are groups for this and one can simply ask for a link in the communities.

What is Roblox doing to combat these?

Roblox told the BBC that it has “zero tolerance for sexual content or behavior of any kind” in the game and that they take “swift action” toward anyone breaking community standards, but still, the NSFW games exist within the platform. Some users on Reddit report that some of the games have already been shut down.

In addition to community standards, Roblox also provided Parental Controls for concerned parents to let them restrict who their children can interact with, the experiences they can access, and how much they can spend. It also added chat filters so inappropriate words, phrases won’t be seen by kids.

Despite these precautions in place, some users still warn parents to check what their kids are playing. Let’s get one thing clear: Platforms like Roblox aren’t all bad but people in the game can be dangerous. Other than the explicit content, parents have lurking predators in the game to worry about. If your kid plays Roblox, ask them about the kinds of games they play on the platform, and make sure to turn on Parental Controls.
