An ‘AHEB’ ripoff just won PHP 1 million from an online contest

Issues of plagiarism and intellectual copyrights aren’t new in the creative industry, but these still trigger feelings of frustration and sadness nonetheless.

The latest victim? Apparently, the cast and crew of ‘Ang Huling El Bimbo’ The Musical. The subject of controversy? A winning piece on an online talent show organized by fried chicken chain Popeyes and actor Matteo Guidicelli.

According to the play’s musical composer Myke Salomon, said piece plagiarized AHEB’s musical arrangements to the tune of a PHP 1 million prize money and a one-year artist contract from Viva Artists Agency.

The contest initially asked participants to submit an entry that showcases their talents in singing and dancing, with a heavy emphasis on ‘Creativity/Originality’ and ‘Quality of Performance’ and ‘Entertainment Value’.

Theater actor Jef Flores posted a breakdown on how certain segments and riffs were copied by the winning piece, later identified to have been submitted by a certain CJ Villavicencio. Flores also pointed out that AHEB was only credited as an inspiration days after the accusations have been made.

Yes, CJ Villavicencio plagiarised Ang Huling El Bimbo The Musical

Last night, CJ Villavicencio won 1 Million Pesos performing concepts, choreographies, and musical arrangements he supposedly plagiarised from Ang Huling El Bimbo: The Musical. This video is a side-by-side breakdown of :"Pare Ko" (Myke Salomon arranger, Dexter Santos direction and choreography) "Pare Ko" (Videography: Ian CastorChoreography: Rommel QuizonMusic Production: Ken Umahon x Cedric Calingasan )where I discuss exactly what was plagiarised according to my own opinion.Other music in the video includes a short snippet ofMichael Jacksons – They Don't Really Care About Us^^ I don't own rights to this musicBias disclaimer: I am not affiliated with Ang Huling El Bimbo, I do not work for them, however many of the cast are close friends of mine. I am a musical arranger, and a theater actor and that's why I'm upset and disheartened. At the same time I don't speak for all people, I only speak for myself. And I chose to make this video because I feel like this is not right.Popeyes Philippines is sponsoring the prize. #PopeyesPHThe Pop Stage is the competition. #ThePopStageIt is hosted by Matteo GuidicelliI would like the Intellectual Property Office of the Philippines to be aware of this.#AngHulingElBimboFor a full Side-by-Side comparison of every song:https://ift.tt/2PnyE78 for those of you who have blogs or media heres a YouTube link that will embed.https://youtu.be/OXANxFudpyM

Eraserheads frontman Ely Buendia also chimed in, saying that it was ‘disheartening’ that the culture of credit grabbing and being rewarded for someone else’s work still persists. Still, he hopes the issue will be laid to rest eventually.

‘…the temptation is always there to take the fast route, the shortcut, the easy way to success. But we are human. I hope this matter is resolved soon and credit is given to those who deserve it’.

The show organizers and Villavicencio have yet to air their side.
