DepEd’s online English tutorials teach us the value of proofreading
Wait what
The Department of Education (DepEd) received flak for having grammatical errors, typos, and questionable sentences during its test airing of TV lessons in line with online learning.
One of the first few errors found was the sentence ‘Tagaytay City is known for wonderful picturesque of the majestic Mount Taal. What does picturesque mean?’ found in their English video for Grade 8 students.
People were quick to correct the erroneous repetition of adjectives, as it could lead to more troubles in terms of online learning. Other examples show the misspelled word ‘mposed‘ (for imposed).
We commend @DepEd_PH for coming up with TV episodes for distance learning in a short span of time but it seems that their content should be carefully reviewed for correctness. #DepEdTV pic.twitter.com/KmxLxn0TvZ

Excerpts from DepEd's Grade 8 English test episode.
Watching it will fill you with even more somber thoughts about the upcoming school year.
Btw the lesson literally ends with "dream…believe…survive." StarStruck ang peg?! pic.twitter.com/vVk2VNwjTV

Meanwhile, a thread by Twitter user @jcpunongbayan suggests that certain sentences were questionable for apparently downplaying the virus as a ‘hullabaloo‘ and generalizing people feeling ‘ecstatic‘ over the lifting of the country’s Enhanced Community Quarantine.
Wait may iba pang mga pasabog. “Hullabaloo” talaga ang dinulot ng pandemya?! pic.twitter.com/QBDDgY7cet

Regarding the typos, DepEd Secretary Leonor Briones explained that the error came from transferring the physical text to digital.
‘Ang original, walang error. ‘Na-trace na namin anong nangyari sa dry run na ‘yan,’ Briones shared.
‘Ang material ay galing sa aming curriculum group, tapos in-input ng aming technical people. Nagkaroon ng error sa pag-transfer at sa pagkopya.’
Despite the errors being an added concern over the department being ‘unprepared‘ for the October 5 resumption of classes, DepEd Undersecretary Alain Del Pascua explained that the errors happened because they were focusing more on the test runs’ technicalities.
‘We’re doing this for the first time that’s why there are test runs and we focused more on the technical aspects of broadcasting – from recording, file conversion, ingestion, mapping, to actual broadcasting.’
Hope they fix it up for good
