Don’t just hope for a vaccine, improve your COVID-19 response – WHO to world gov’t

Shots were fired

In a move that people been saying for a long time (read: ‘Waiting for a vaccine isn’t the only COVID-19 plan we need), the World Health Organization (WHO) just told the world’s gov’t that rather than waiting around for a vaccine, they ought to strengthen their response now.

The jab was said by WHO Western Pacific Director Dr. Takeshi Kasai, who suggested that the focus should be to ‘continue to improve our response and not just hope for the vaccine.’ Sounds familiar, TBH.

Kasai furthered that even though potential vaccines are being tested, the ‘production capacity will not really meet the demand [of] the entire world.’

President Duterte has long been advocating for Filipinos to wait for upcoming vaccines, as he’s even volunteered to be the very first person to be tested with Russia’s untested Sputnik V vaccine. Turns out, he’s not even qualified because only ages 18 to 59 are prioritized, and Duterte is 75.

On the other hand, New Zealand has been one of the model nations in dealing with the virus. At the early stages of the pandemic, the country shut down borders, spread wide dissemination about the importance of physical distancing, and prioritized testing.

Unfortunately, NZ is set to undergo lockdown once again after over 10 new local cases have been confirmed.

Meanwhile, over 165 COVID-19 vaccines are being developed, with eight in Phase 3 of clinical trials and only two currently in the approval and testing stage.

The two aforementioned vaccines for final testing are Russia’s Sputnik V (which did not go through Phase 3) and China’s CanSino Biologics.
