Malacañang not amused after its ‘Province of China’ joke becomes reality

Turns out, reality can be annoying

Social media went into uproar after a Chinese beauty product was discovered after claiming that it was packaged in ‘Binondo, Manila, Province of China’. The label was largely brought to attention by Puwersa ng Bayaning Atleta (PBA) Partylist Representative Jericho Nograles, who has since appealed to blacklist the brand.

When asked about the issue during a briefing, Presidential Spokesperson Harry Roque simply dismissed it as ‘kalokohan’ (nonsense).

‘Wala namang naniniwala na tayo ay probinsya ng Tsina. Alam naman natin na lahat ng Pilipino ay nagmamahal sa bayan’, he said.

‘We are proud to be Filipinos and we would never allow to be subjugated by any foreign body’.

WATCH: Presidential spokesperson Harry Roque said the mislabeling of Manila as a province of China by a beauty product manufactured in Binondo was "kalokohan", and that the Food and Drug Administration will decide if it should be blacklisted.

It can be remembered that President Duterte himself jokingly pitched the idea in a speech to Filipino-Chinese businessmen back in 2018, after he expressed his admiration for President Xi Jinping for the latter’s cooperation over the issue of Scarborough Shoal.

‘Kung gusto ‘nyo, gawin niyo na lang kaming province, parang Fujian. Province of Philippines, Republic of China’, said Duterte.

As for whether the beauty product would be blacklisted or not, Roque leaves the decision to the Food and Drug Administration, as it holds an exclusive jurisdiction over the matter.
