‘Demon Slayer: Mugen Train’ now the 5th highest-grossing anime movie in history
Surpassing ‘Weathering With You’
Per Crunchyroll, ‘Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba Mugen Train’ is breaking Japanese box office records one by one.
The film garnered 20.4 billion yen less than a month since its October premiere, making it the fastest Japanese film to gross the 20B yen mark. It achieved the feat in just 24 days, less than half the time it took for fellow animated film ‘Spirited Away’ with 61 days.
Onto worldwide records, Demon Slayer has also slain Makoto Shinkai’s ‘Weathering with You’ and ‘Stand by Me Doraemon’ to become the 5th biggest anime film of all time. It still falls behind record-holder ‘Your Name‘ and the all-Ghibli lineup of ‘Spirited Away’, ‘Howl’s Moving Castle’, and ‘Ponyo’.
The feat doesn’t come without precedence, as ‘Demon Slayer – Kimetsu no Yaiba’s undeniable hype and rich storyline make for a loyal following even amidst the pandemic. You can check out the anime for yourself on Netflix.
Meanwhile, ‘Mugen Train‘ is set to drop in PH via special fan screenings at select SM Cinemas on November 28.
