YouTube is cranking up the ads in 2021

Not a fun time

More and more advertisements will be cropping up on YouTube in the near future – as if those back-to-back non-skippable ones weren’t already causing enough stress.

The news comes after the platform updated their Terms of Service, as it will soon allow ads to appear on channels that aren’t meant to be monetized in the first place. Meaning, creators who aren’t part of the YouTube Partner Program will feature ads without getting compensated. Shucks.

‘You grant to YouTube the right to monetize your Content on the Service (and such monetization may include displaying ads on or within Content or charging users a fee for access). This Agreement does not entitle you to any payments,’ the new policy reads.

Previously, only creators with more than 1,000 subscribers were asked to join the paid Partners Program. Now, it’s possible that we’ll see ads on the most lowkey and obscure of channels.

Experts say that the additional ads strategy is a move to gain more YouTube Premium members (PHP 159/month), as the premium membership removes all ads on all videos. Not to mention how YouTube has also been cranking up its offers for it.

Meanwhile, the new policy is already taking effect in the U.S. and will be followed by other regions in 2021.
