Pinky Webb’s hair flip should be the mood to every temper tantrum

There’s this age-old unofficial rule when it comes to debates ‘The first one to lose their sh*t, loses’, or as we Filos like to quip ‘Ang pikon ay talo’.

While guesting on CNN’s The Source, Presidential Spox Harry Roque was asked by host Pinky Webb about his opinion on the termination of the DND-UP accord. At the 10:23 mark, Webb cited a tweet by UP professor Danilo Arao, which questioned the ‘honor and excellence’ of UP alumni serving as top gov’t officials, should they remain mum on the issue.

Webb used the tweet as a segue to ask Roque if he personally denounces the DND’s decision to end the 30-year-old agreement with UP. Roque, an alumnus himself, chose to remain neutral, citing his role as the Presidential Spox, and instead offered to broker a discussion between the two parties.

However, after a brief break, it seems that Roque didn’t appreciate being placed on the spot. He also finds the tweet unfair, adding that he isn’t ‘duty-bound to follow anything Arao says’.

‘You made it appear as if it’s compulsory to follow him’, Roque accuses Webb.

‘Spox, don’t get me wrong, I wasn’t saying that you were duty-bound’, countered Webb.

‘You were implying as if I have to follow what Danny Arao says. What was the basis for that?’ continued Roque, with Webb answering ‘It was a tweet, sir’.

‘But you said I had to follow him, and if I did not do as he did, then I have no honor or excellence. Is that a fair question?’ challenged Roque.

Webb clarified ‘No, I didn’t say that. Just to be very clear about this. It is a tweet that I read and I asked for your reaction if you would denounce it’.

What follows is a good two minutes of back-and-forth about who implied what and who pressured whom, with Roque growing visibly irate with every second, while Webb kept her cool, capped off by a casual hair flip at 14:35.

The moment was captured by the Internet as the ideal mood to dealing with temper tantrums. And this brings us to our first point. Even if Roque had a point (he didn’t) somewhere in that flustercluck of an exchange, he automatically loses since he lost his cool.

Never throw a Roque in an argument, kids. Stop reacting in CAPS. It never ends well. Instead, sit back, collect your thoughts, and do the Pinky on the haters.
