The Manila Metropolian Theatre is opening its doors this April
What used to be the stuff of legends and old wives’ tales is now finally opening its doors to visitors – at least for one night this year.
In a Facebook post by the National Quincentennial Committee (NQC), they announced that the Metropolitan Theater (MET) is aiming to complete restoration by April 27, 2021, in time for the 500th anniversary of the 1951 Victory at Mactan.
‘In 2021, we will commemorate the Philippine part in the achievement of science and humankind in circumnavigating the planet for the first time. Central in this commemoration is the 500th anniversary of the Victory at Mactan,’ their caption reads.
The upcoming event will be the national landmark’s maiden show in 25 years after its 1996 closure, as the plan was originally proposed back in October 2020.
Serving as a National Historical Landmark and National Cultural Treasure, the Manila MET has had its fair share of cultural ups and downs throughout the years, as its once decrepit halls have apparently been renovated as of late.
The last big update regarding the now-renovated building was back in January 2019 from Manila Mayor Isko Moreno who shared new photos of the MET featuring brightly-lit halls and frankly impressive modern architecture.
Meanwhile, there’s no word just yet on how the MET will implement physical distancing and safety protocols once it opens this April.
