‘Cruella’ is giving off some creepy Joker vibes

In the 101 Dalmatian movies, Cruella De Vil was a straightforward Disney villain: she wanted to skin Dalmatian pups for their fur. Yes, she had her eccentricities, which were charmingly portrayed by Glenn Close, but for the most part, she was a simplistic ‘symbol of greed, vanity, and evil’.

2021’s Cruella aims to flesh out this narrative by transforming the icon into a mad, yet driven upstart. Yes, she’s still all bad, as the trailer points out, but she’s also a determined schemer who’s willing to burn the place down just to prove a point.

The prequel film is set to drop on May 28, 2021, in the United States, and stars Emma Stone in the titular role.
