Pixar is apparently casting its first transgender character

Pixar is taking another step towards diversity as they’re now apparently looking to cast their first-ever transgender character. San Francisco-based LGBT organization Trans March shared the official casting call from the studio on their official Twitter account.

According to the poster, the ideal actress should be between 12 to 17-years-old and is ‘enthusiastic, outgoing, funny, and energetic.’ The actress should also feel comfortable acting in front of a microphone and can authentically portray a 14-year-old transgender girl.

As seen in their follow-up tweet, Trans March declares the casting call as legitimate as they claimed to have spoken to the casting director of the upcoming film.

On Pixar’s official website, the studio has three upcoming films for release: Luca in June 2021, Turning Red in Spring 2022, and Lightyear in Summer 2022. In an article by The Disinsider, fans theorized that Turning Red would most likely see the debut of the transgender character, largely due to the description of the film’s protagonist, which reads:

‘Mei Lee is a confident, dorky thirteen-year-old torn between staying her mother’s dutiful daughter and the chaos of adolescence.’

Maybe the new character will serve as a best friend of Mei Lee? Or is it Mei Lee herself? Time will only tell. In the meantime, the role is open to all qualified actresses who want to give it a try. Applications can be submitted via Pixar’s email casting@pixar.com.
