Ateneo apologizes for saying ‘they’re not for everyone’

It’s the season of announcing accepted college applicants at the Ateneo de Manila University (ADMU). While it might sound like a time to celebrate, things took a turn when the university’s official Twitter account posted a supposed tone deaf remark.

ADMU’s Team AMDG account welcomed incoming freshmen students for the school year 2021 to 2022. They also encouraged them to follow the university’s Loyola Schools Twitter account.

According to GMA News, ADMU replied to TEAM AMDG’s tweet by saying, ‘Speaking of the first order of business, accepted applicants need to gather their documents for confirmation, watch out for their school’s Open House, and assess their other options well. We’re not for everyone.’

The seemingly arrogant statement at the last sentence, “We’re not for everyone,” drew the attention of Twitter users, urging the university to declare a public apology.

Before the university deleted their tweet, thousands of people on Twitter already quoted their post and pointed out their elitist tone. The university admitted that they “phrased that quite poorly and arrogantly.”

‘We framed and phrased this poorly and regret ending with such a tone deaf sentence,’ ADMU also said in a now-deleted tweet, according to Reportr.

‘And the casual callousness of our reply reflects, quite badly, on how we’ve let generations of elitism and privilege get to our heads. We hear you and we thank you for calling us out. We can only promise that we are working to do better and be better,’ they continued.

The university’s college entrance test results were announced on Monday.
