Myanmar proves social issues have a place on the world stage

It’s that time of the year again when pageant fans all over the world unite. The 69th Miss Universe Competition took place in Hollywood, Florida, the USA, on May 17, 8 a.m. PHT. Apart from the anticipation of who’ll bring home the crown, other recognitions such as the National Costume winner were a highlight.

There were quite a few Miss Universe candidates who exhibited their call on a powerful statement on current social issues. One of them is Miss Myanmar Ma Thuzar Wint Lwin, also known as Candy Thuzar, who won this year’s National Costume category.

During the preliminary performance last Friday, Miss Myanmar was clad in a traditional beaded Burmese weave. She also held out a banner with words that read, “Pray for Myanmar.” It has been reported that mass protests were taking place all over her country since their military took control amid the COVID-19 Pandemic.

For her performance, Miss Myanmar is now left unsure of where she’ll go after the 69th Miss Universe competition since she cannot return to her country in the meantime as per BBC News. She said, ‘On social media they threatened me, saying when I go back to Myanmar… prison is waiting for me.’

While Miss Grand Cambodia Lyv Chili stated that pageant fans should stay out of politics, Thuzar thinks otherwise. She shared that voicing out social issues was considered as a “duty”, ‘These are crimes against humanity, that’s why we want the UN to take action urgently… We want our leader back and we want real democracy back.’

Other famous personalities also received backlash for speaking up on social issues like Lebron James. Even when people said he should “stick to dribbling a basketball,” he continued to use his voice in the advocacies he stands for like the Black Lives Matter movement. Locally, Angel Locsin recently got attacked by internet trolls DDS for setting up a community pantry on her birthday. The actress organized the pantry to help her fellow countrymen during these trying times.

On the other hand, Miss Universe Philippines Rabiya Mateo’s national costume was inspired by the Philippine Flag. The color blue represented royalty, red symbolizes the courage and strength of an independent woman, and yellow for the sun and stars. Her Miss Universe journey ended after finishing in the top 21.
