US and Russia are reviving their space race rivalry – for cinema

Who knew that pushing the boundaries in filmmaking will go this far? Russian space agency Roscosmos shared that they have a team and shooting date for their upcoming movie to be filmed in space. Their announcement was followed around a year later after Tom Cruise was reported to also shoot in the cosmos.

The Russian film shared its working title called Challenge. The space drama strives to “popularise Russia’s space activities, as well as glorify cosmonaut profession” according to The Guardian.

After a medical screening for the drama’s cast, they have decided on a team of four who are fit to shoot in space. The main crew will include actor Yulia Peresild and director Klim Shipenko. At the same time, the reserve crew is composed of actor Alena Mordovina and director Alexei Dudin.

‘Among other things, they will have to take centrifuge tests, vibration stand tests, perform introductory and training flights on a zero-gravity plane, undergo parachute training,’ Roscosmos said per Inquirer.

The Russian crew is set to film their expedition on October 5 to be carried out at the International Space Station.

Almost a year before Russia declared their plan on shooting in space, Deadline announced that Hollywood actor Tom Cruise and Elon Musk’s Space X are working on an action-adventure project with NASA. There are no updates on Cruise’s exact shooting date, but it was reported that his liftoff is also scheduled for October 2021.
