10 movies to show someone who asks what the ‘real world’ is like
In case no one has asked this question lately: how are you? If you just graduated college (congratulations, btw!) or you’re still learning the ropes in the so-called ‘real world,’ then you’re probably hoping that it came with an instruction manual. You might have missed it, but subtle warning signs about life may have appeared in some movies.
Whether it’s run-of-the-mill selections that are lowkey guilty pleasures or replay-worthy classics, the movies below have their own way of slapping you with reality and allowing your imagination to take over at the same time.
1. Soul
There are many things to look forward to in this animated movie — discovering what gets you in the zone, how souls are made, jazz music, and more. Towards the end, you have to catch that scene about a fable that will help you contemplate the whole idea of looking for that “spark” in a different way.
2. The Secret Life of Walter Mitty
Working a nine-to-five job can be draining, but that’s how some people earn their moolah. Fellow corporate slaves could relate to Walter Mitty (Ben Stiller), who daydreams scenarios that are presented to be larger than life, something you could also agree on when your mind wanders at work. If you’re figuring if he’ll ever break free from this routine, safe to say that the ending might send you on a rollercoaster of emotions.
3. Parasite
For those who haven’t overcome the one-inch tall barrier of subtitles, it’s time to give this Oscar award-winning film a chance. It all started when Ki-woo’s (Woo-Shik Choi) best friend offered him a tutoring job at a wealthy household. As ordinary as it sounds, things started going south from there. Beyond that, it captures the difference between the marginalized and privileged people in society. You will see how ignorance, money, and greed had the upper hand in the unfortunate circumstances that happened.
4. When We First Met
Whether or not you agree, there are a few moments in life when you wished things turned out differently. Noah Ashby (Adam Devine) had the ability to travel time and attempted to change things to go his way through a magical photo booth. The more chances he gets to repeat what he sees as a mistake, the more he understands what he truly wants.
5. The Devil Wears Prada
Book-to-film adaptations aren’t always a success, but this movie didn’t fail to blow away its audience. Andrea Sachs (Anne Hathaway) is an aspiring journalist who ended up working for a year at a high fashion magazine with an ulterior motive to enter the world of journalism afterward. Regardless if it’s in the movies or not, there would always be detours before reaching your dream.
6. LSS
Together with Sarah (Gabbi Garcia) and Zack (Khalil Ramos), you can explore lessons about unrequited feelings, friendship, the desire to achieve your goal, and the right kind of love. Since music is at the center of the film, imagine yourself vibing at a Ben&Ben concert while enjoying OG hits from the local band.
7. 13 going on 30
From the glittery wishing dust to the Razzles candy, the short-lived moments from this movie will give a nostalgic vibe to those who enjoyed watching this when they were younger. And hey, maybe Jenna Rink (Jennifer Garner) would make people think twice this time if being thirty, flirty, and thriving is really everything one could wish for.
8. Lady Bird
Ideally, ‘real world’ problems are faced after adolescent years. People her age are usually still trapped in a bubble long before reality pops it, but Lady Bird (Saoirse Ronan) shows how a teen confronts difficulties. From having complications with her mom and friends to the desire of attending college far from her hometown — all of that and more might remind you of how you would’ve handled things differently when you were younger.
9. The Hows of Us
If you’re a Filipino rom-com connoisseur, then this KathNiel film is surely somewhere on top of your list. Although if you haven’t watched any of their movies, this can be a great start. It presents the IRL confrontations that one can relate to: the struggle of keeping promises, weighing your own dream and someone else’s passion, and the burning reality of it all.
10. Dogtooth
How will you get out of your comfort zone if you still have strict parents despite being a grown adult? Enter Dogtooth, it’s uh, wildly bizarre, but it might make you reconsider that your parents aren’t so bad after all. Picture this: the kids believe their parents’ explanation that a street cat is an extremely dangerous animal, which can be found outside the fences of their home. Therefore, they were stuck in the house ever since.
