This artist sold an ‘Invisible Sculpture’ for 800,000 pesos

Artworks come in many forms, and true enough, some artists make it big once they get to sell their pieces. In this instance, however, an artist decided to auction a piece of his imagination that is supposedly considered a ‘work of art.’

An Italian artist named Salvatore Garau has sold a so-called ‘Invisible Sculpture’ for 15,000 euros or approximately 868,370 pesos, as per Newsweek. The immaterial figure is titled Io Sono which translates to “I am” in Italian.

The 67-year-old artist relates his sculpture to a vacuum that is a space full of energy. Garau explained to ArtNet, ‘Even if we empty it and there is nothing left, according to the Heisenberg uncertainty principle, that nothing has a weight.’

‘Therefore, it has energy that is condensed and transformed into particles, that is, into us,’ he elaborated.

Since the buyer can’t physically take home the sculpture, they received a certificate of authenticity instead. Garau also gave out instructions indicating that the sold figure should be placed in a five-by-five unobstructed area.

‘When I decide to ‘exhibit’ an immaterial sculpture in a given space, that space will concentrate a certain amount and density of thoughts at a precise point,’ Garau explains. ‘Creating a sculpture that, from my title, will only take the most varied forms.’

Believe it or not, Io Sono was reportedly Garau’s first piece to be sold, but not the first of its kind to be created, according to High Snobiety. In May, the artist exhibited a  sculpture in Milan titled Buddha in Contemplation.

Garau’s Instagram video came with an explanation about another immaterial art piece, ‘Now it exists and will remain in this space forever… You do not see it but it exists. It is made of air and spirit.’
