Boy Abunda’s question at Bb. Pilipinas sounded like our 2am thoughts

Like with all things pageantry-related, Filipinos were abuzz with this year’s Binibining Pilipinas. And amidst all of the memes and debates on who should’ve won what, it was a question by Boy Abunda that stole the spotlight.

For the show’s Q&A portion, the talk show host asked Iloilo’s Karen Laurrie Mendoza: ‘When is it okay not to be okay. And when is it not okay not to be okay?’

It was an insanely tough question, partly due to its ‘substance’, partly for its structure. Harder questions have been asked in the pageant world, such as Pia Wurtzbach and her stance on US military presence in the Philippines.

But answering what was essentially a riddle/tongue twister hybrid while under duress is nothing to scoff at. For her part, Mendoza tried her best, responding:

‘You know, sometimes, it’s hard to move on especially that if we lost our loved ones, when we’re depressed when we have anxiety, but most of all, when we want to move forward in life.

You know, my favorite saying in a movie Disney, ‘Inside Out’, is embrace your sadness because in embracing your sadness you will feel happiness afterwards.’

Pressures of the pageantry aside, Boy Abunda’s question is actually the type that gets repeatedly mulled over for fun, like one of those 2am thoughts you drunkenly ask your friends.

Given that we tend to have an overabundance of opinions, we asked the We The Pvblic crew to give it their best shot – minus the alcohol, sadly.

Alexis Calub, Content Producer

‘Everyone’s feelings are valid, so you can’t really control “when” one’s emotion should be acknowledged. But you can always set it aside for a while when you need to be the bigger person’.

Bea Zaragoza, Multimedia Artist

‘Hmmm… it’s okay not to be okay if your feelings/opinions/views are being invalidated. It’s not okay to not be okay if your emotional response will affect other people. Like, being unprofessional in work, or being rude in front of your parents. In Jesus name, Amen’.

Gelo Lasin, Content Producer

‘It’s okay not to be okay if you’re feeling mentally drained over your work, because no job is worth losing your mind over.

However, if you’re the breadwinner of the family, or you’re in a financial rut, certain sacrifices have to be made. As awful as it sounds, sometimes breakdowns need to be rescheduled. Hindi ka pwede hindi maging okay ngayon’.
