ICYMI, the ocean was on fire over the weekend

In the words of the Internet, it was ‘like a scene from a freakin movie’.

A portal of hellfire opened over the Gulf of Mexico last July 3, Saturday, due to a leak in an underwater gas pipe. The pipe in question is owned and controlled by Petróleos Mexicanos (Pemex), a state-owned oil company in Mexico.

The bubbling inferno occurred near a drilling platform in the Ku Maloob Zaap oil field, considered as Pemex’s flagship and most profitable territory. Overall, the area features 82 wells, 17 platforms, and produces around 700,000 barrels of oil per day.

The fire was eventually considered controlled after five hours, with no reported spills, injuries, or evacuations. An investigation is also underway to discover the root cause of the leak.

But while the incident was without any major catastrophe, the Internet couldn’t help but voice their shock, awe, and even condemnation of the world’s continued reliance on fossil fuels.
