Itchyworms released a stop-motion MV capturing the realities of growing up

If you have been keeping tabs on the OPM scene, Itchyworms is certainly a band that you know like the back of your hand. They produced OG hits like Antipara, Beer, Ayokong Tumanda, and ‘Di Na Muli throughout the years. As the pop-rock outfit marks their 25th anniversary this year, they released an animated film highlighting indigenous Filipino culture.

The 4-minute flick wouldn’t be complete without Itchyworms’ track titled The Life I Know, which is part of their fifth studio album, Waiting For The End To Start. It is embedded with Filipino cultural sensibilities that are presented in a stop-motion animation format, making it the first of its kind.

The music video was directed by an award-winning filmmaker and band’s former manager Marie Jamora. Joining her was Jason McLagan of Indie Pop Films with animation from Apartment D.

The Life I Know‘s video follows the story of a little girl named Awit. She was used to the attention of being her mom’s only child, but then tension entered the room when her baby brother was about to arrive. One day, she journeys into an alternate world where she interacted with her new sibling.

‘With this spiritual quest, Awit realizes that she needs to accept her new baby brother in order to reconnect once again with her mother,’ Jamora added.

Cami Kwan, Director of animation, shared the importance of the film in presenting the universal experience of growing up. She explained that the concept relates to how a child starts to lose the world they’ve known, and navigate a new realm that is both uncomfortable and terrifying, but is part of a bigger life process.

‘There is a beauty and awe in embracing a wider world, of seeing beyond yourself, but there is an inherent loss in that as well, and we wanted to explore that sense of melancholy as well as that sense of power and joy,’ Kwan added.
