PAWS urges evacuees to take care of pets amid Taal Volcano alerts
The Philippine Animal Welfare Society (PAWS) encourages Taal Volcano residents to bring their pets with them once they evacuate. Looking back, the volcano’s eruption from January 2020 led to animals passing away or being abandoned.
‘We urge pet owners to please bring their pets with them when they evacuate to avoid stress, heartache and further tragedy,’ PAWS stated in a post.
PAWS also posted an advisory for pet owners to keep in mind in case ashfall breaks out:
• Keep pets or other animals indoors. Large animals should be brought into stables or in any form of shelter.
• Make sure food, water bowls, or troughs for farm animals are not exposed. The grass and vegetation for feeding ruminants goats, sheep, and cattle must be washed and ash-free.
• Watch out for respiratory signs such as coughing, difficulty breathing, and sneezing among others. Have them checked by a veterinarian immediately.
• If pets have been exposed, remove the ash from them by wiping or giving a bath, do not let them lick the ash.
• Sweep or wash off ashfall from yards, patios, and other outdoor areas to keep your surroundings clean.
Taal Volcano was placed under Alert Level 3 on July 1 and remains as such as of writing. Level 3 refers to “High Level of Volcanic Unrest“, meaning that magma is approaching the surface and that it could lead to hazardous eruptions in a matter of weeks.
