5 thoughts we had after watching ‘Rak of Aegis’
ICYMI, PETA’s Rak of Aegis is available to stream online. The acclaimed musical, which features songs from legendary OPM rock band Aegis, follows the story of Aileen, an aspiring social media star who dreams of a better life beyond her flood-ridden barangay.
The show, which stars Aicelle Santos and Pepe Herrera, still has two screenings left on ticket2me.net on August 7 & 8. We managed to nab an earlier screening of Rak of Aegis, and if we had to sum up its 2 1/2 hour run, we can say that it was definitely worth the watch.
Rak of Aegis‘ quality production is no surprise, given the show’s seven season run from 2014-2019. But more than its music, what makes Rak of Aegis good is it’s depiction of the average Filipino’s struggles and aspirations.
While not all of us live in submerged neighborhoods 24/7, we’ve all had the feeling of wanting something better for our lives. That despite the limitations, both personal and societal, we have the potential to be more. Rak of Aegis captures this kind of hope, along with the accompanying regrets, fears, and frustrations that we may have.
It’s a musical that captures the not-so-pleasant realities of ‘the real world’, while giving just enough sense of a promise that things can be changed for the better.
Sidenotes:
- Don’t let the generation gap intimidate you. As a 20-something who only knows one or two Aegis songs (Ayoko sanaaa!), it was barely an issue. The story’s good, you guys!
- Pepe Herrera should be in more things. The guy is a scene stealer.
- ‘Multi-hyphenate’ is a word that gets tossed around too often, but Aicelle Santos deserves it. A singer, a theatre actress, with a presence regardless of medium, this girl is fire.
- Whoever designed the stage and its effects deserves an award.
- While the musical’s mood transitions from somber to fun and vice versa, there is nothing amusing with the IRL situation of Filipino flood victims. We, as a people, need to do better.
