Women apparently think it’s cute when men don’t speak clearly, says study

Women have different standards to determine whether or not they someone attractive. However, there’s a study that stated a desirable trait that women apparently consider: it’s when men mumble or don’t enunciate their words clearly.

Scientists with the American Institute of Physics discovered that women find men more attractive when they articulate less clearly because it is said to be more “masculine.” The findings were published in The Journal of the Acoustical Society of America.

The study’s author, Dr. Daniel Stehr at the University of California, explained that males with qualities that are slightly more masculine than average are usually preferred from a sexual standpoint. He said, ‘In this context it would make males with less clear speech more attractive.’

Some examples of men that were described to speak less clearly, but can still manage to capture women’s attention are Marlon Brando, Tom Hardy, Frank Sinatra, and more.

For the study, the researchers recorded 42 people performing several speech tasks and used separate pools of individuals to assess the vocal attractiveness of the recorded participants.

They examined how clear speech may strongly predict attractiveness ratings. They focused on the concept of ‘vowel space area’. Professor Sarah Hargus Ferguson at the University of Utah explained, ‘A simple definition of vowel space area is that it’s an index of how far apart a talker’s vowels are acoustically.’

The results showed that when speech becomes more coherent, the vowel space area increases, which can be seen as a peak on a graph. Dr. Stehr said, ‘Though the data we collected showed a strong relationship between clear speech measures and vocal attractiveness in female talkers, ultimately we did not find this to hold for our male talkers.’

With that conclusion, it turns out that males, on the other hand, find clear pronunciation as something attractive in the opposite sex because it indicates “femininity.” Study authors say that women talk in a way that is “acoustically and phonetically more distinct” compared to men.
