Margielyn Didal’s New Balance sneaker design was inspired by Cebu’s ‘puso’

It’s been a few months since Margielyn Didal won the vibe check during the 2020 Tokyo Olympics. From joking about Tony Hawk asking for a photo to making TikToks with her fellow skater, she definitely enjoyed every minute of the competition. Meanwhile, she shows another side of herself through a collaboration with New Balance.

For the footwear brand’s Numeric line, Didal did a makeover on the NB Numeric 272 sneakers by crafting it with a design inspired by a Filipino snack called puso. The Cebu delicacy contains cooked rice wrapped in a woven pouch of palm leaf, which the pro-skater used to sell when she was a kid.

New Balance posted a video of Didal talking about the collab and also included her mother briefly showing how to make puso. The 22-year-old said as she was describing the texture of the sneaker, ‘The coconut leaves, it’s got the details on the side (of the shoes). When you see and touch it, it’s like holding a puso.’

The puso-inspired sneakers are made from black suede and mesh material which. The sides have gray checkered patterns that mirror the snack’s surface when weaved. The insoles also have the delicacy’s image printed on them and co-branding.

New Balance said in its announcement post, ‘Who thought selling the Filipino rice snack known as “puso” next to a skatepark in Cebu, Philippines would change Margie’s life forever?’

If you want to get your hands on the Margielyn Didal x New Balance Numeric’s 272 “Puso” sneakers, it’s priced at $79.99 (approximately P4,067) available on the New Balance website.
