Squid Game is so popular an internet provider is suing Netflix

With only over two weeks since the release of Netflix’s Squid Game, the show’s popularity has spilled over into real life. There were tracksuits being sold, cafes holding honeycomb promos, and people dialing the calling card number. Meanwhile, the show’s streams were so high that a South Korean internet provider sued the streaming giant.

SK Broadband’s legal filing followed after Netflix’s increased traffic due to the popularity of the action-thriller series. It also claims that the streaming giant was the country’s second-largest traffic generator, which increased 24-fold starting May 2018 to September 2021.

The internet company wants Netflix to pay for network access ever since 2018. The estimated amount was 27.2 billion won (approximately Php. 1.1 billion) solely for 2020. South Korean lawmakers also voiced out that some content providers, including Netflix, aren’t paying for network usage fees despite gaining explosive traffic. Other platforms like YouTube, Amazon, Facebook, and Apple are said to be paying their own.

SK Broadband’s payment demands weren’t baseless since a Seoul court effectively confirmed the streaming giant’s obligation to pay for its network usage. According to The Korea Herald, the court said, ‘Netflix is at least receiving network services, including management of the network quality, at a cost… It is also reasonable to say that Netflix has the obligation of paying the price for the services to SK Broadband.’

Netflix released their response regarding the issue, ‘We will review the claim that SK Broadband has filed against us. In the meantime, we continue to seek open dialogue and explore ways of working with SK Broadband in order to ensure a seamless streaming experience for our shared customers.’
