Troye Sivan says his ‘Angel Baby’ MV will celebrate queer love

The anticipation for love to arrive can be a feeling that lingers for a while and Troye Sivan’s song Angel Baby captures that desire. Catching up with him in a virtual talk was like having a FaceTime call with a friend. He casually shared that he was in a studio in LA, where was taking a break before going back to work on a new song.

But as the world waits for his new music, there’s a lot to unpack regarding his latest single. He said, ‘Unfortunately for me, Angel Baby is like a complete fantasy.’

‘It’s not reality,’ he continued. ‘But I mean it starts off in a verse [where] you can feel that kind of like pining, where it’s like you know, I’ve almost given up on the idea of finding someone, and then you know on a rainy night, there, you kind of like showed up.’

If you’re still waiting for that special person, then Troye is technically just like you. He added, ‘That’s the part that I’m waiting for. Like the pining is definitely there but the man showing up on a rainy night has yet to happen… It’s like the ultimate fantasy of finding that person that just makes you wanna live in that moment forever and makes time slow down.’

Troye described Angel Baby as an “adoring, doting, love struck, mega pop, gay, power ballad”. It surely takes in the dreamy feel that the singer wants to pass on. When it comes to the track’s upcoming music video, he shared that it actually mirrors the song. He also gave a teaser on the concept, ‘The video is like a complete fantasy. It’s really a celebration of queer love in a really beautiful, like hot way.’

The intimate ballad took a while to complete. Troye was in Australia the first time he wrote it until the song came into one piece when he flew back to LA in the latter part of 2020. It was also co-written by Jason Evigan, Michael Pollack, Sarah Hudson, and JHart. When asked if his upcoming album will have references from Angel Baby, he admitted that he wasn’t completely sure yet.

The 26-year-old singer explained, ‘Those references that you hear on Angel Baby and those sounds are very beautiful and inspiring to me, so I’m sure that there will be hints of it.’

It’s been almost six years since the release of Troye’s debut album Blue Neighborhood, followed by another record Bloom, an EP In a Dream, and some singles. But he revealed that Angel Baby was like a new kind of side to his voice. He said, ‘I just feel more confident and I think you can hear that in the music.’

Since Angel Baby was born out of a semi-fictional idea, it’s safe to say that Troye isn’t directing it to anyone. But he confessed that he sends his songs to the people who inspired him to make them. He shared, ‘I do send the songs to the people that they’re about. Not always, but a lot of the time I do. Because sometimes like I said before, sometimes it’s just my most accurate way of communicating a feeling.’

While the music video is yet to be released, you can watch the Angel Baby visualizer below that gives off a ‘90s cinematic visual. Maybe you can also send it to that person who crosses your mind when the song plays.
