Telegram welcomed 70 million new users after Facebook’s crash
The recent outage of Facebook on Monday caused Instagram, Messenger, and WhatsApp users stranded from communicating online. However, Telegram a.k.a. the graveyard of your failed ‘harots’, came to the rescue as it welcomed over 70 million new users.
Telegram founder Pavel Durov shared on his channel that the messaging app experienced a record increase in activity and registration from users, which he called “refugees” from other platforms. He wrote, ‘I am proud of how our team handled the unprecedented growth because Telegram continued to work flawlessly for the vast majority of our users.’
While people are on Telegram for different reasons, Durov asked the OG users to properly greet those who just joined. He added, ‘Since I ask our existing users to say hi to their newly arrived friends, help them unpack, and let them know what we have in stock. Make sure they stick around and see why Telegram is light years ahead of the competition.’
There were 3.5 billion users affected by the outage of the Mark Zuckerberg-owned platforms, which was caused by configuration changes to its routers. EU antitrust chief Margrethe Vestager said that the interruption showed the repercussions of relying on “just a few big players” and the need for more similar apps.
Durov ended his message by assuring people who recently signed up, ‘For the new users I’d like to say this – welcome to Telegram, the largest independent messaging platform. We won’t fail you when others will.’
