BTS is the first Asian act to win ‘Artist of The Year’ at the AMAs

Several Korean-related things have made a mark this year — from Korean words added to the English dictionary to K-Drama Squid Game is Netflix’s most-watched show. But when it comes to music, K-pop group BTS didn’t just win one, but three awards at the 2021 American Music Awards (AMAs).

The boy band brought home the awards for ‘Pop Song of the Year’ and ‘Pop Group of the Year’, while also making history as the first Asian act to win the ‘Artist of The Year’ award. The septet went on stage for their acceptance speech, and RM started by giving thanks and recalling how they had a live performance for the AMAs four years ago.

‘It’s been a long and amazing ride since then, but nobody could have ever bet on the odds of us standing here receiving this award. Except for the ARMY,’ he said. Another member, Suga addressed the crowd in Korean followed by Jungkook who mentioned that they want to “make people happy with our music.”

Apart from landing multiple awards, BTS – composed of RM, Jin, Suga, J-Hope, Jungkook, Jimin, and V – also performed My Universe along with Coldplay. The K-pop group wore yellow-colored suits as they performed Butter for the show’s finale. Megan Thee Stallion was supposed to perform with them for the Butter remix, but she had to cancel due to an “unexpected personal matter.”

Both ARMYs present at the AMA crowd and online couldn’t contain their happiness for the K-pop group that they stan. ‘Artist of The Year’ trended on Twitter, with over two million related posts as of writing. The trending topic is full of BTS photographs and videos that encapsulate their iconic win.
