Harry Potter director wants to film ‘The Cursed Child’ with the OG trio
Harry Potter director Chris Columbus revealed in an interview that he wants to add another film adaptation to the franchise with original cast members Daniel Radcliffe (Harry Potter), Emma Watson (Hermione Granger), and Rupert Grint (Ron Weasley).
Speaking with Variety, Columbus was asked if there will be more Harry Potter movies. He responded, ‘I would love to direct “The Cursed Child.” It’s a great play and the kids are actually the right age to play those roles. It’s a small fantasy of mine.’
Harry Potter and the Cursed Child is written by J.K. Rowling and John Tiffany, which is a two-part play that is set 19 years after the events that transpired in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows. It premiered at the London Palace Theatre in the summer of 2016 before making its way to Broadway in 2018, where it’s still currently having runs.
During the interview, Columbus also revealed that he kept in touch with Radcliffe and exchanged texts with Tom Felton. Two decades had passed since he directed the first part of the series Harry Potter and the Sorcerer’s Stone was premiered in 2001. He also directed the second installment The Chamber of Secrets (2002).
Following Columbus, filmmaker Alfonso Cuarón directed Prisoner of Azkaban (2004), while Mike Newell brought to life Goblet of Fire (2005). David Yates got to continue on the last four films based on the original book series’ narrative.
Before Potterheads get excited over the director’s statement, nothing is set in stone yet. Earlier in July, Entertainment Weekly spoke to Radcliffe about a possible reunion with his Harry Potter cast members, and he said, ‘I’m in the Dominican Republic at the moment filming and then I’m going to be busy, kind of working on bits and pieces until the end of the year.
‘So yeah, I don’t know,’ he added. ‘I’m sure there will be some sort of celebration but I don’t know if we will be getting together or anything. I’m sorry if that’s a bit of a disappointment to anyone.’
