A moment of silence for Modern Family, New Girl, Grey’s Anatomy, HIMYM leaving Netflix
We can’t have nice things
It’s the end of an era for our comfort binge-watch sessions as fan faves Modern Family, New Girl, How I Met Your Mother, Grey’s Anatomy are set to leave Netflix globally this month. Disclaimers can be seen on each show’s title cards, indicating a final watch date of December 31.
Reasons for the departure all point to distribution rights. With Disney and other studios creating their own streaming services, they are now reclaiming their titles as these contracts expire. Modern Family, New Girl, and HIMYM are currently available on Disney+ and Hulu.
This inevitable exodus is the reason why Netflix is investing $13.6 billion in original content, which includes scripted series, anime, and movies. The platform has found success in this venture, with award-winning titles like The Crown and Marriage Story, and record-breaking viewership hauls with Squid Game and Red Notice.
Forgive us for being dramatic, but while these removals are expected, they’re a sad sight nevertheless. We’ll certainly miss New Girl’s endearing quirkiness and Schmidt being our main loveable douchebag. Modern Family is iconic for its perfect mixture of laughter and feels. Grey’s Anatomy is the epitome of medical drama. And who could forget How I Met Your Mother, the nostalgic show that turned us into sappy, hopeless romantics?
Still, even with the departure of our fave shows, there are tons of incoming content dropping on Netflix, with new seasons of Emily in Paris, Cobra Kai, The Witcher, and fresh titles such as Schitt’s Creek. Here’s hoping they’re just as good, if not better.
