‘I am not a virus,’ says a man named ‘Kovid’

Some say that your name reveals a lot about you. There’s no wonder why some parents would make a list of baby names to choose from before their child was born. But an Indian man named Kovid Kapoor had no idea that his name would be tied to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

The 31-year-old man traveled outside India for the first time since the virus spread worldwide, and his name caught people’s attention. He even changed his Twitter bio to emphasize his point: “My name is Kovid and I’m not a virus.”

Even before his recent post went viral, Kapoor has replied to tweets trying to make a punchline out of his name. A user told him that people shouldn’t catch him holding Corona Beer, and he replied with a picture of him actually holding the said drink.

The whole ‘Kovid’ stunt surely earned the attention of online users. It started a storm of jokes, memes, DMs, and interview proposals for Kapoor. He also hoped that this would help him gain free publicity for his business, a trip planning site called Holidify.

While Kovid isn’t a usual name to have, he shared that it means “learned” or “scholar” in Hindi. He explained, ‘It’s an extremely uncommon name—to the point that I’ve met only one other Kovid in life. And yes, we bonded over the joke after the pandemic.’

Speaking with Indian Express, Kapoor was asked if he experienced any anti-Asian hate crimes since his given name was often associated with racial slurs. He recalled, ‘I was in Sri Lanka and people were nothing but extremely nice—and they were always pleasantly/mildly amused with the name. But thankfully no negative incident.’
