Catch someone’s attention with IG’s new ‘Private Story Likes’
Instagram has developed many updates for users to safely receive messages from other people. But this time, getting someone’s attention on the app won’t consist of sliding into their DMs. The platform’s new feature called Private Story Likes allows you to like an IG Story without starting a convo.
Previously, any interaction you sent through IG Stories (whether it’s an emoji reaction or a whole message) will show up as a reply in DM form. According to Instagram head Adam Mosseri, the latest feature won’t clog up the user’s inbox.
Mosseri explained that a heart icon will be seen between the “send message” and little paper airplane icons. He added, ‘And if you tap on it, it’ll send the author of that story a like, and that like will show up in the viewer sheet, not in your DM thread with them.’
Private Story Likes
Starting to roll out today, you can now send some love by liking people’s stories without sending a DM.

Mosseri also explained that IG Story likes won’t be seen in public, but the creator will be able to view them. Users can head over to their Story Insights, where they will see a small heart icon next to the viewer’s name who sent some love.
Mosseri said, ‘The idea here is to make sure that people can express more support for each other, but also to clean up DMs a little bit.’
Instagram hasn’t officially indicated if the feature will be considered as a ranking factor. But this new feature might be a way to increase Stories engagement for creator and business accounts.
