Are the Filipinos happy? PH is the 2nd happiest in SEA this 2022

The Philippines has made it to several intriguing rankings worldwide – from the most number of female scientists to best and worst food in Southeast Asia (SEA). Recently, the PH landed the second happiest country in SEA, according to this year’s World Happiness Report (WHR) released by the Sustainable Development Solutions Network (SDSN).

The nation earned small progress as it went up a notch from 61 to 60 out of 146 economies worldwide. It also landed a score of 5.904 in WHR’s tenth year of conducting this report. Meanwhile, Singapore beat the PH by taking the top place in SEA, and the 27th spot in the world with a 6.450 score.

Brunei is part of the 10-member Association of Southeast Asian countries, but it wasn’t included on the list. Rankings of other nations from the subcontinent can be seen below:
– Thailand (61st)
– Malaysia (70th)
– Vietnam (77th)
– Indonesia (87th)
– Laos (95th)
– Cambodia (114th)
– Myanmar (126th)

While happiness is subjective, the findings of each country were based on various factors such as social support, healthy life expectancy, personal freedom, perceptions of corruption, and gross domestic product per capita. This edition considered responses from more than nine million individuals from over 150 countries in 2021.

After gathering the responses, the answers ranging from an average of the past three years revealed the overall top 10 rankings in the world:

1. Finland
2. Denmark
3. Iceland
4. Switzerland
5. Netherlands
6. Luxembourg
7. Sweden
8. Norway
9. Israel
10. New Zeland

The results are arguably not conveying personal experiences per country, but SDSN’s report highlights that there’s an increase in goodwill despite the COVID-19 pandemic.

The report stated, ‘This benevolence has provided notable support for the life evaluations of givers, receivers, and observers, who have been gratified to see their community’s readiness to reach out to help each other in times of need.’

With the upcoming national elections in the Philippines and the ongoing conflict between Russia and Ukraine, there’s a possibility for the rankings drastically change during its next coverage.
